Owney RPO Day
Join us June 12, 2025 as we celebrate OWNEY, the canine mascot of the United States Railway Mail Service.
Owney was a stray who wandered into the Albany post office in 1888, and was soon adopted by the Railway Mail Service clerks and became the mascot of this elite government service. He traveled throughout the state, and then all over the country in the RPO cars, eventually venturing around the world as a U.S. Post Office Department “emissary” in 1895.
Admission includes our Railyard Local Train Ride, where car hosts will share the story of Owney with passengers.
To celebrate Owney, we're 'REACTIVATING' our Railway Post Office Car. Kids will be given a postcard featuring our honorary pup. At the post office car they will receive a stamp, and will address the card so it can arrive at their home via the USPS. Postcards will be stamped with a special Museum Owney Day Pictorial Cancelation.
Admission also includes a Hot Dog, drink, and chips for everyone.
Admission is $15 for everyone age 2 and up (under 24 months free).
